The Success of your site depends upon the "Topic" you choose. You can take any topic and can have a nice site of your own but you can't get success until you have the knowledge of that topic or at least vary interested in that, so that you can write something about it. You have to keep writing on the topic of your site and update the content of your site to get real success.
Just take an example, on parenting there are around 2 million sites, it looks like a big number but you can get your site on the first page of Google ranking, because many sites contains the keyword , but there are only few that are exactly relevant to the topic of keyword. So say from 2 million sites just about 500 sites were exactly about parenting, now it is not difficult to get the good rank between 500 sites, isn't it.
So just keep doing work on the topic you choose or it is better to choose the topic that really interests you or about which you have a deep knowledge. Say if your water tank is not having sufficient water to draw for a month, how long you will be able to draw the water from the tank, just for few days then? then definitely you have to do something and arrange for more water,without which you can't live. So it's like that, it is better to have a tank full of water so that whenever you want you can have sufficient water. Keep the windows of your mind open and let the things to flow from here and there, so that whenever you like you can put them on your site and get better response.
